Notice From Parents' Campaign - Submitted Story February 05, 2010

We made some good progress in the Senate today!

Senator Alan Nunnelee of Tupelo held that bill on a motion to reconsider, saying that details of the bill needed to be worked out. The bill will now have to be taken up again by the Senate before it can move on to the House. It is critical that our Senators know how much we appreciate the "yea" votes on this amendment and that these Senators continue to support the amendment when the bill is brought up again. Please thank the senators who voted yea! It is also important that Senator Nunnelee, as Appropriations Chairman, bri ng the bill back up for consideration quickly so that schools can avoid the serious consequences that will result from further delay.

Please ask your senator, listed below, to support Senator Hopson's amendment restoring $45-million to K-12 education.

Sen. Johnnie Walls Capitol:

Capitol Switchboard Number:

Please also ask Senator Alan Nunnelee to bring SB2688 back up quickly and to support the Hopson amendment so that the bill can move to the House for approval.

Governor Barbour has called a press conference for tomorrow (Friday) at 11:00 a.m., and it is anticipated that he will announce a 4th round of cuts. I will monitor that press conference and will post updates on our website and report significant developments to you by email. You can find information about the status of education legislation at any time on our Bill Status webpage. I am receiving daily information from superintendents, teachers, and parents about the effects of budget cuts on their schools. I am posting those as quickly as I can, so continue to chec k here for updates.

I can't tell you how grateful I am for your wonderful work on behalf of our children! We should all find comfort in the fact that so many of the men and women who represent us in the Legislature take seriously their obligation to represent their constituents and respond to your concerns. Thank you for speaking up for our schoolchildren time and time again. Their futures will be brighter because of you!

Many, many thanks,

Nancy
